Welcome, 2011!

I've been a bit more proactive this year than last in thinking of my Word of the Year in order to start on January 1. "ADAPT" was the word for 2009, and "EMBRACE" was quite fitting for 2010, with many of the intentions I expressed in this post fulfilled.

After reading this great post on photographer Kim Klassen's site and also this lovely site with thoughts about choosing your word, I had narrowed it down to three. They were Adventure (we have some awesome travels planned for this year), Patience (after all, we have two teenagers, LOL!), and Presence (to remember to breathe and stay in the moment). I was nearly sidetracked after a recent visit to Fallingwater and walking through the surroundings made me think of BEAUTY but then I decided that part of being in the present is observing the beauty all around.

I have a feeling that 2011 is going to bring some special times, and with greater awareness of the passing of time I want to stay present, to be in the moment and to not let my thoughts race ahead with busyness or dwell on past mistakes.

I mentioned the possibility of a giveaway a few weeks ago, and since so much of the country has had extremely cold weather already I am gifting a reader with pair of warm alpaca socks and two skeins of bulky weight alpaca yarn (your choice, either hand-dyed or natural. To win, leave a comment with your chosen Word of the Year or a resolution you've made for 2011. I'll pick a winner from those commenting by random generator on next Wednesday, January 5th at noon EST!

  1. I have been waiting to see what your word would be this year! Love it! Last year my word was "effortlessness" and it served me well. This year I have chosen "steadfast". To see things through, stay the course, stay on track. Thanks for teaching me this really neat technique.

  2. Picking from your words I choose Presence. Picking from my own word for 2011 it has to be DoubleRainbow! To replace my overuse of Amazing and Awesome. Now everything will be DoubleRainbow Great, or DoubleRainbow Wonderful! Or just DoubleRainbow!

  3. I thought of "Present" also, but further thought brought "Content."
Both are great goals for the year ahead. :-)

If chosen, I would like the hand-dyed yarn (though I think my chances are slim-to-none, as I have yet to see the #1 chosen on giveaways. Still glad to read your blog! :-)

  4. Still trying to settle on just ONE word. Think I'm more in need of a paragraph this year! I'll let you know when I whittle it down.

  5. Even though I won Dianne's wonderful giveaway and therefore have probably used up all my luck for the coming year, I would love to be entered!

I haven't really thought much about a word of the year or resolution, but like what another blogpal is using: sufficient.

  6. My word for the coming year is simplify. There are soooo many areas of my life where that word needs to apply. But, like the word itself...one day at a time...

  7. Well Michelle, it's looking like you've currently got a 100% chance of winning, which is a lot better than sufficient! Hmmmm, I don't know if everyone's playing catch-up after the holidays this week but I've decided to go on and extend the giveaway until Friday at noon. Thanks for participating!!!

  8. Found your blog through Dianne's and since I can't seem to keep my toes warm this winter thought this might be a great giveaway!
I guess my word for the new year would have to be Grace...
    Thanks for the opportunity.

  14. I'm a lot like Mark Twain "I've been through a lot of terrible things, a few of which have actually happened." This year with a resolve not to worry my defining word would be "faith" - things will work out!

Thanks Lindy, I'm new to your great blog.

  15. While at the doctor's office today, I watched a new mom feed a her baby a bottle while texting someone on her phone and I was convicted to live in the present. So if you don't mind, I'd like to use Presence also. And thanks for the chance to win the giveaway.

  17. I read sheep dreams and she directed me to your give away. My knitting resolution for 2011 is to finish the 20 or so projects in progress and nearly finished. So the opereating word for 2011 is FINISH. Thank you for your generous giveaway. rosevta@hotmail.com

  19. I would have to say....SIMPLIFY.

It covers so much of life....simplify my schedule to enjoy more time with my family, simplify my lifestyle so there is less stress.....etc

Here's to 2011...may it be all you want it to be! The giveaway sounds amazing!

  20. Well, Tonya used my resolution so I will use one word - "complete". This applies to work, knitting, housework..... It could be my age but I get sidetracked too easily! Great contest and I know that your yarn is fabulous!!

  21. Hello:

I am always looking for great, warm socks for my cold toes.

A word, hmmm.... Not sure, but my resolution again this year was to be nice to all those people who help - those behind sales counters, the library staff, etc.

My word for 2011 is GIVING.

  23. Hi Lindy !!!
    Happy New Year !!!
I think I missed the deadline ... but I love your word choices and I started thinking of a word for me ... and came up with ..present.
I need to stop looking in the past and worrying about the future and to cherish the now !!! The present ! I need to appreciate all the wonderful things around me and all the "gifts " I have in my life .... thus the word " present ".
Thank You for making me think and realize how very fortunate I am !!!

  24. Love your blog...beautiful photographs! I resolve to have a more positive attitude in 2011. A smile can do wonders for the soul!

  25. My word for the new year is PLAY. I want to make time for the spontaneous ideas that come up. They are usually put in the "for later when I have time" folder, only to be uninspiring when I open that folder months later. I'd like to still get things on my TO DO list done, but allow the time to be spontaneous in my creative endeavors.

  27. Lighter: I want to continue eliminating unneeded things from my home and organize what remains. I'm also helping my mom do the same in her home (hoarding territory). I swear my whole house feels like it's lighter, brighter and happier when I haul stuff away!

  28. Enjoying your blog...lovely photography. My resolution is to work on having a more positive attitude. A smile can go a long way!

    Happy New Year!

  31. My word is "flexible" and I'd like to try to be more go-with-the-flow rather than trying to control things. Things so often seem to work out better when just left to their own. This may be a tough one for me!

  32. I am so excited to enter your give-away. My daughter and I have just begun knitting again after many years and we have become junkies....especially for wonderful yarns. Have a great day...from the sunny south in Atlanta....

  33. Goodness...I forgot my word.....It would be Simplify. Simply, simplify.
And, of course, knit a lot! :)
p.s. I found you through Sheep Dreams...

  35. Lindy, I don't know what happened, but I posted a comment on the very day your giveaway was presented. In fact, I remember I was the very first and said I figured my chances of winning were scarce to none as I've yet to see a winner on a giveaway that is #1. I then gave "Content" as the word I've chosen for this year. Later in the day I checked back, and there were four comments posted, so I don't know what happened to them! So glad I came to read your blog today and noticed your "P.S." because I would love to have some of your yarn! :-)

  36. Lindy,
What a great way to invite readers to contemplate the year to come. I gave up resolutions some years ago - too much frustration & guilt. I love the one-word approach. I've been thinking of 3: connection, focus & mindful. Of these, the one that resonates the strongest right now is FOCUS.

Thanks for the opportunity to choose a mantra, & to perhaps win some lovely fiber goodies in the process.

  39. Hi Lindy,
This will be my third attempt at commenting. First time was the very first day you posted your giveaway(learned of you from sheepdreams-dianna) and was #1. Later that day there were 4 total comments, so don't know what happened to them. I commented again yesterday, and it's not here, either. I thought perhaps I need to be a follower so have added my name there and do hope that keeps me on the list to win. I really enjoy your blog (read some old ones, too) and would love to have some of your yarn!

Lindy, I have enjoyed reading your blog posts. All the wonderful photos with the kids...they really are growing up.

My word for 2011 is Learning. If all goes as planned, I'll be "learning", CPR, First Aid, Bible classes, weaving, new knitting patterns, fiber sorting, and whatever else comes my way.

Looking forward to an exciting 2011.

  47. Thank you so much for having such a nice giveaway. I started the year giving away things too.
I think if I had to pick a word if would be, "Reinvent." I've been trying to break out of my old patterns and do something new this year. Can't wait to see what happens!
